Never Stop Reading

Zurich

Book launch: Tuesday 3 November 2026
Exhibition: 3 November 2026 – 11 January 2027
Never Stop Reading, Zurich

Presentation of the research by Elke Schoonen, followed by a conversation between art historian Philip Ursprung, architect Daniel Niggli (EM2N) and An Fonteyne.

“Benoît: Artist in Architecture” is the first book to present the collaborations of Belgian cartoonist Benoît van Innis (1960–2024) with the architectural firms De Smet Vermeulen, EM2N, jo taillieu architecten / advvt, Kraaijvanger Architects, Marie-José Van Hee, Robbrecht en Daem, noAarchitecten and Sergison Bates architects. It forms part of the research into the work of Benoît van Innis by the Chair of Affective Architectures, Prof. An Fonteyne, at ETH Zurich, and explores the collaboration between the artist and the architects in great detail, tracing the emergence of a shared, new authorship in the interplay between art and architecture.

Organized into the thematic chapters Table, Room, Landscape and City, Benoît’s spatial works are presented in depth, each introduced by a descriptive text based on the experience of the architecture itself and the unique works associated with it. Further essays shed light on Benoît’s working method and the craftsmanship underlying these projects. An illustrated catalogue of Benoît’s entire art-in-architecture oeuvre completes the volume. Published by Scheidegger & Spiess, the book is available in English, French and Dutch.

The Bruges-born Van Innis gained Europe-wide recognition after moving to Brussels in the 1990s, where he was commissioned to decorate the Maalbeek metro station during its renovation. He created a work in Portuguese tiles, known as azulejos, featuring eight stylised faces that observe both each other and the commuters.

An event hosted by the publisher Scheidegger & Spiess and Never Stop Reading, followed by a book sale and drinks. The exhibition is supported by ETH Zürich and the Benoît Foundation. Admission is free; the presentation is held in English.
